Mood Enhancing Substances

I’ve heard that the way to get a great workout is to ‘increase your resistance’. Well then, I had a fantastic workout, because during the time I spent on the elliptical today, I RESISTED the urge to SING every time my favorite Bollywood songs came on my playlist! I also RESISTED dancing when those upbeat, toe-tapping, Post Modern Jukebox jams came on! And that’s a good thing… because me dancing on the elliptical machine could only end in disaster. Not that I don’t have stellar moves, (These curves put the ‘hip’ in hypnotic!)  but I am

By the Shower Door

I like to take a hot shower at night, before bed. I'm not a person big on routines, my hours, my days have a somewhat haphazard quality to them, as every day is a bit different. A different job and a different schedule each day doesn't lend itself to routine. But the hot shower before bed is my delight. It allows me to wash away the dust of the day,  and later my curly head  will air dry on the pillow while I dream.

A hot shower is my routine. Hotter than hot for this body that's always just a little too chilly, never quite warm enough for any length of time. This scalding shower chases away the chill and clears my mind. Wash away the day, wash this body, wash the long legs made strong from yoga, wash these

A sneak peek into the making of a CD.

My new CD, 'Beautiful Souls', released over a month ago. In the months leading up to the release I was very busy with everything that has to happen prior to a release concert. This is my FIFTH collection of original songs, so all of the tasks involved in this musician's life are well known to me by now, but maybe not very well known to you. So, if you ever wondered what goes into the making of a CD, read on!

The Other Shoe

Anyone who has survived trauma of any kind knows the uneasy feeling that comes when life 'gets good again'. It is the shadowy companion of happiness that warns you not to get 'too' happy, because the rug got ripped out from under you before and it could happen again. Every dose of happiness brings along a dose of anxiety. We are always waiting for the other shoe to fall.

What Else is Possible?

Today I begin teaching my own hatha yoga class. Yay! This day is special to me for many reasons. One of those reasons has to do with what happened last year on this very date....

It's Messy

Some of my students participated in a recital this afternoon that was sponsored by the Reading Music Teachers Association. I enjoyed many really sweet moments of music today, but they were not the highlights of the recital for me. Nope. The highlights were in the things that went wrong.

Can Only Be Seen in Winter

This morning I was driving to yoga under a dreary grey sky and thinking about how much I miss the leaves on the trees. I was reminding myself that the trees aren't dead, they are just resting. I came around a bend in the road and saw...

A New Year Begins

For so many years, as far back as I recall, by the time December 31st came around I was more than ready to leave the old year behind me, far, far behind me. But this year is different.

How to Avoid Money

How to Avoid Money isn't generally a topic that will get a lot of attention, especially during the holiday season, but for those few folks, the 'go-against-the-grain' souls, you might appreciate this topic. It is the holiday season and so much of what we do revolves around money....buying gifts, mailing cards (stamps cost money), purchasing special groceries for that holiday meal....it is hard to do without money. While we may not be able to avoid it completely, perhaps we could think about avoiding money during the holiday season. What would your holiday look like with no money? Could you still enjoy yourself?

Dance of the Beached Whale and other Midnight Musings

I had one of those Mondays. Do you know the kind that I mean?  Like a bad cup of coffee that is tinged by bitterness and yet I recognize that bad coffee is still better than no coffee. Today wore the grey cloak of disappointment. It began in yoga class. And incidentally, Monday’s class is my favorite yoga class, taught by my favorite teacher. She is a true yogi.  The kind of person that makes you feel blessed and benefited just by being in her presence.  So I really don’t want to sound ungrateful when I confess that after every instruction she gave to the class, my inner voice said, “Are you freaking kidding me?!”
